Abstract

Stæhr Johansen, T. & Baden, H. 1973. Re-appraisal of the Sengstaken-Blakemoore Balloon Tamponade for Bleeding Esophageal Varices; Results in 91 Patients. Scand. J. Gastroent. 181-183.

91 patients with massive bleeding from esophageal varices were treated with Sengstaken-Blakemoore balloon tamponade. Primary hemostasis was achieved by first tamponade in 88 per cent, in second tamponade in 82 per cent, and in third tamponade in 64 per cent. Permanent hemostasis after one to three tube treatments was achieved in 45 per cent. The tamponade treatment was the direct cause of death in two patients.
