Abstract

Borgström, S., Emås, S., Lilja, B. & Borg, I 1973. Acid Response to Pentagastrin in Relation to Age and Body Stature in Male and Female Ulcer Patients. Scand. J. Gastroent. 8, 209-216.

The peak acid output (PA030) to subcutaneous pentagastrin was determined in 154 male duodenal (DU) and 30 male corporal gastric ulcer (CGU) patients, and in 50 female DU and 18 female CGU patients. The response decreased significantly with age in male DUs and CGUs independently of the response being expressed as PA030 or as functions of body stature. In female patients the response tended to increase with age in DUs and to decrease in CGUs. This was true for the PA030 and PA030 as functions of body stature. Both in males and females the response of the DUs and CGUs did not differ in young patients but was higher in elderly patients with DU than CGU. Since the acid response decreased with age in male DUs and tended to increase in female DUs, the acid response was higher in young and middle-aged male patients and equal or slightly higher in old female than male patients. The intercept between the regression lines (response versus age) for male and female DUs was dependent on the response being expressed as PA030 or as functions of body stature. In CGUs the PAO30 and the PA030 related to body weight were higher in males than females, but the difference decreased with age. For comparison within the sexes, age was of major and body stature of minor importance; for comparison between the sexes, age and body stature were of major importance.
