Abstract

Geismar, P., Mosbech, J. & Myren. J. 1973. A Double-Blind Study of the Effect of Carbenoxolone Sodium in the Treatment of Gastric Ulcer. Scand. J. Gastroent. 8, 251-256.

The investigations were performed in 34 patients, treated with 300 mg carbenoxolone daily for one week, and thereafter with 150 mg daily for three weeks, or placebo for the same periods. The ulcer healing was examined both by gastroscopy and by X-ray. In the carbenoxolone group an increased healing tendency was found, but this effect was not statistically significant. In this group there was a significant weight gain, a decrease in the concentration of serum potassium values, a tendency to a rising blood pressure, and to a decrease in peak acid output. After an observation period of 1-24 months, about 40 per cent of the healed ulcers had recurred.
