Abstract
Kairaluoma, M. I. & Larmi, T. K. I. 1973. Vagotomy and Healing of Phenylbutazone Ulcer in the Rat. Scand. J. Gastroent. 8, 313-316.
Phenylbutazone-induced ulcers in the rat healed very fast. One-third of the ulcers epithelialized in 12 hours, half the number in 72 hours, and all in six days. Healing was faster in the very superficial ulcers than in those which had penetrated deeper or were more extensive. Despite the discontinuation of acid secretion it caused, vagotomy did not accelerate but rather slightly slowed the healing process, possibly because of antral stasis. Healing peptic ulcers did not affect the animals’ weight gain, whereas vagotomy retarded it significantly.
