Abstract

Seppälä, Kari. Cytology in the estimation of the survival rate of patients with gastric cancer. Ten years’ follow-up study of 140 cases of malignancies. Scand. J. Gastroent. 1973, 8, 529-531.

In a series of 140 cases with gastric malignancies, cytological finding was interpreted as suggestive of malignancy (Papanicolaou Grades IV and V) in 82 %. In the follow-up it was found that 26.6 % of the patients in the resection group were alive after 5 years and 20 % per cent after 10 years. This is more than in other materials in Finland from the same years. The follow-up results suggest that gastric cytology can improve the diagnosis of gastric cancer, thereby giving therapy a greater chance of success.
