Abstract

Schrumpf, E. & Stadaas, J. Effect of gastric distention on motility and plasma gastrin concentration before and after secretin administration Scand. J Gastroent, 1974. 9, 119-122.

Gastric motility and gastrin concentration in plasma have been measured in six volunteers before and after stepwise distention of the stomach. Stepwise increases in gastric volume caused graded increases in gastric motility, but no change was seen in the gastrin level. When similar gastric distention was performed concomitantly with a constant infusion of secretin (3 U/kg · h). motility was abolished, without any change in the gastrin concentration. It is concluded that distention of normal fasting human stomach under the conditions of this study did not give any rise in gastrin concentration, and also that the motility-reducing effect of secretin is independent of changes in the gastrin level.
