Abstract
Das, K. M., Eastwood, M. A., McManus, J. P. A. & Sircus, W. The role of the. colon in the metabolism of salicylazosulphapyridine. Scand. J. Gastroent, 1974, 9, 137-141.
After ileostomy there was a significant decrease in the concentration of total sulphapyridine (SP) in serum and urine. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in urinary excretion of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). There was, however, no significant difference in salicylazosulphapyridine (SASP) concentration in serum and urine following ileostomy. Ileostomy effluent contained approximately 70 % of the administered dose of SASP as SASP and 14% as free SP. In the two patients with transverse colostomy, the concentration of SP in serum and urine was significantly higher than the patients with ileostomy. Sulphasalazine concentration, however, did not differ significantly.
