Abstract

Jägerstad, M., Lindstrand, K., Nordén, Å., Westesson, A.-K. & Lindberg, T. The folate conjugase activity of the intestinal mucosa in celiac disease. Scand. J. Gastroent. 1974, 9, 255-259.

The folate conjugase activity has been compared in small intestinal biopsies from controls and patients with celiac disease. A flat mucosa, one criterion of celiac disease, had a markedly higher conjugase activity than biopsies with a normal villous structure. Inflammatory cells, predominantly lymphocytes and plasma cells, in the lamina propria of the celiac material were suspected to cause the increased conjugase activity. Leucocytes from normal blood were examined for conjugase activity and also fractionated into lymphocytes and granulocytes. The conjugase activity was found to be localized to the granulocyte fraction only.
