The effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D were compared on basal gastric secretion in rats with chronic gastric fistulae during a 14-day period of treatment. Rats given PTH and vitamin D showed both a reduction in gastric secretory rate and in concentration of hydrogen ions in the gastric juice when compared with corresponding saline-treated controls. The pre-treatment level of total and free sialic acid in the gastric juice was unchanged in PTH-treated rats. A similar effect was caused by treatment with vitamin D. The corresponding controls showed a reduction. Gastric level of fucose showed no significant change.
