A cheap apparatus for combustion of 0.5 g faecal samples is described. The 14CO2 and 3H2O produced is absorbed in a mixture of phenylethylamine, ethanol, and water, which can be mixed with a toluene liquid scintillator for counting. 14C-recovery 94-101%, 3H-recovery 89-99%.
