Abstract

Dencker, H., Kamme, C., Norryd, C., Mårdh, P.-A. & Tylén, U. Examination for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in human portal blood collected by transumbilical catheterization. Scand. J. Gastroent. 1974, 9, 367-369.

Portal blood specimens were obtained by transumbilical catheterization from 24 patients with carcinoma of the colon. Culture gave no growth of aerobic or anaerobic bacteria except in one case, in which bacteria of the anaerobic species Propionibacterium acnes, probably contaminants, were isolated. The present study produced no evidence of bacteria occurring in the portal venous system.
