Review of subgenus Compsochromia Kiriakoff 1953 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae, genus Balacra) with identification keys and description of a new species from Cameroon

Abstract

Summary. Subgenus Compsochromia Kiriakoff 1953 is briefly reviewed. An overview of the taxonomic history of the group is provided along with a checklist covering all synonyms. Balacra flava n. sp. is described on the basis of eight specimens of both sexes collected in Cameroon. Three separate keys, based on male and female habitus as well as on the male genitalia, are presented for the determination of Compsochromia specimens. The vesica of B. compsa is described and illustrated for the first time.

Résumé. Révision du sous-genre Compsochromia Kiriakoff 1953 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae, genus Balacra) avec des clefs d'identifications et la description d'une nouvelle espèce du Cameroun. Le sous-genre Compsochromia Kiriakoff 1953 est révisé brièvement. Une vue d'ensemble de l'histoire du groupe est donnée ainsi qu'une liste de tous les synonymes. Balacra flava n. sp. est décrite à partir de huit spécimens des deux sexes récoltés au Cameroun. Trois clefs d'identifications différentes des Compsochromia sont proposées: l'une basée sur l'habitus mâle, l'autre sur l'habitus femelle et la dernière sur les genitalia mâle. La vésica de B. compsa est décrite et illustrée pour la première fois.
