Revision of the New World genus Neorthopleura Barr (Coleoptera: Cleridae)

Pages 1-35 | Accepted 07 Feb 2013, Published online: 24 May 2013

Abstract

Summary. The checkered beetle genus Neorthopleura Barr is revised to include 27 species, of which 11 are described as new: N. patula n. sp. (Honduras), N. epitoma n. sp. (Mexico), N. abunca n. sp. (Mexico), N. ardia n. sp. (Virgin Islands), N. minas n. sp. (Mexico), N. galbina n. sp. (Panamá), N. loba n. sp. (Brazil), N. guayasensis n. sp. (Ecuador), N. uncopanda n. sp. (Puerto Rico), N. baja n. sp. (Mexico), N. apletosa n. sp. (Panamá) and N. sonora n. sp. (Mexico). A lectotype is designated for N. ichnoides (Chevrolat), and neotypes for N. quadraticollis (Spinola) and N. thoracica (Say). Neorthopleura duplicata Barr is considered a junior synonym of N. quadraticollis (Spinola), and Orthopleura pulchra Pic a junior synonym of N. velutina (Klug). Pelonium subfasciatum Chevrolat is removed from synonymy and is considered the senior synonym of Orthopleura guadeloupensis Wolcott and Neorthopleura nesiotes Barr. A key to the known species is provided. It is hypothesized that ancestral Neorthopleura diversified in Middle America with ancestral stocks projecting into the West Indies and South America during the Cenozoic. Twenty-two plates depicting line drawings, electron micrographs, distribution maps and habitus figures are included.
