Abstract

Although the symbiosis between legume and root nodule bacteria is generally considered to be highly specific, the degree of specificity varies widely among rhizobia (Gabriel and Rolfe 1990; Young and Johnston 1989). Some strains show a very narrow host-range, for example, Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii nodulates only Trifolium. In contrast, Rhizobium sp. NGR 234 nodulates 35 legume genera, in addition to the non-legume Parasponia (Lewin et al. 1987).
