Soil Science and Plant Nutrition started in May 1955 as Soil and Plant Food, published by the Society of the Science of Soil and Manure, Japan (now known as the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, JSSSPN). In issue number 1 of volume 1, a total of 29 papers were included to cover soil chemical and biological characteristics, fertilizers, lime, slag and manure applications, such as “Glassy volcanic-ash soils in Japan” by Kanno, “Some characteristics of the humus in soil types” by Harada, “A proposed method to determine adequate amount of fertilizers to be applied to crops” by Hashimoto and Kawaguchi and “Radioactive contamination of plants in Japan” by Mitsui and his group, and so on. It was quarterly until Vol. 8, then bimonthly afterwards. It may be surprising that there were so many active studies presented in English even from the beginning of this journal, but our society has already issued another Journal of Science of Soil and Manure, Japan (now as Japanese Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition) in Japanese with English summary since 1927. Before my tenure, Soil Science and Plant Nutrition has been managed by 25 Editors-in-ChiefFootnote1 and numerous national and international editorial board members and reviewers. Soil Science and Plant Nutrition covers current hot topics in soil physics, chemistry and mineralogy; soil biology; plant nutrition; soil genesis, classification and survey; soil fertility; fertilizers and soil amendments; environment, and socio-cultural soil science. Soil Science and Plant Nutrition also includes outstanding reviews and special issues to focus on important areas such as soil degradation, trace element studies in plant nutrition, soil-plant-environmental interactions, radio-nuclide contamination and so on. Soil Science and Plant Nutrition became a cooperative journal of the International Union of Soil Sciences in August 2010. Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is publishing the very best papers as active contributions by JSSSPN members and non-member soil scientists from all over the world.
