SYNOPSIS
By tracing accessions at the National Collection of Fungi, correspondence housed in the Forestry Branch's archives, items noted in the Forestry Branch's Annual Reports, published papers and unpublished survey data, a list of fungi associated with Pinus spp. in Natal, the Orange Free State and the Republic of Transkei was compiled. The earliest report appeared in 1910 when Sphaeropsis sapinea was found associated with dying Pinus pinaster at the Harrismith Plantation in the Orange Free State. Since then, 47 different fungi have been found with at least 19 different Pinus spp. The most commonly reported fungus has been S. sapinea. Other notable fungi found in these regions have been Armillaria spp., Stereum sanguinolentum, and Pseudophaeolus baudonii.
