SYNOPSIS
The Lowveld Fire Protection Association was formed in mid-1986, with a membership covering 180000 ha of plantation land and most plantation owners, with the State in an observer status. A Fire Danger Index system was adopted immediately, initially providing a forecasting service to members only, but later the forecast was broadcast on national radio for general information of the public. The accuracy of the forecasts fell within acceptable limits and these were useful to forestry personnel. Improvements are envisaged during 1987 and other possibilities for improvement are outlined.
