SYNOPSIS
Periodicity in leaf fall, and in the growth of roots and shoots of Ocotea bullata was studied. Leaf fall of canopy trees was measured to establish the natural phenological pattern of mature trees. Shoot growth was measured on potted plants in the screen house of the nursery. Root growth was studied on seedlings grown in glass-faced containers (rhizotrons) in the screen house. Both leaf fall and shoot growth showed a definite seasonal pattern. Root-shoot growth showed a cyclic periodicity.
