SYNOPSIS

Essential oils were obtained from the mature leaves, bark and seed of mopane (Colophospermum mopane). Over 50 compounds were detected and the major compound from all three plant sources was found to be α-pinene. The oil from the bark was slightly different from the other two fractions in that it contained comparatively lower quantities of α-pinene, appreciable amounts (about 5% each) of two unknown compounds of molecular weights 278 and 262 respectively and α-and β-eudesmol.
