Hydrogen bonding and surface tension properties of aqueous solutions of tetrahydrofuran

Abstract

Significant changes observed in the tetrahydrofuran—water mixtures of different molar ratios have been determined the extent of intermolecular association via quantitative Raman experiment. The hydrogen bonding changes with the addition of tetrahydrofuran. The changes of surface tension are analyzed with hydrogen bonding in the mixtures. The result shows that the strengthening of hydrogen bonding between tetrahydrofuran and water contributes to weak the surface tension in the solutions. The correlation between surface tension and mole fractions of tetrahydrofuran is non-linear. This study provides an experimental basis for enriching the hydrogen bonding theory of multivariate aqueous solution systems.
