Abstract
Questioning gender-related assumptions which have influenced the theory and practice of research, this paper explores the ramifications of a research approach that would take the personal into more serious account. A case study of the author's own research for and writing of Drawn to Art is presented. Several areas of concern are identified and examined, including the personal motivations of the researcher, the possible biases of the time or people under study, and the role of imagination in the reconstruction of one's own past and that of others.
