“England Saved My Life.” An Interview with Historian Roland Marx

Abstract

Born in 1933, Roland Marx (seen here at left, talking with Paul Archambault) has held the chair of British History and Civilization at the Sorbonne (Paris III) since 1991. From 1973 to 1991 he was Professor of British Civilization and head of the Institut d'Etudes Nord-Américaines at the Université de Strasbourg II. During that period he also taught courses on modern French history from Napoleon to De Gaulle at the Syracuse University Center in Strasbourg. Professor Marx has published more than twenty-five books dealing with English and Irish history, the history of Alsace, the history of the British Commonwealth, international relations, and the Industrial Revolution. His most recent books include La Grande Bretagne depuis 1945 (1996), De l'Empire au Commonwealth, 1850-1994 (1995), and La Révolution industrielle en Grande-Bretagne (1990).
