Knoevenagel Condensation of Aromatic Aldehydes with Active Methylene Compounds using a Catalytic Amount of Iodine and K2CO3 at Room Temperature

Abstract

A convenient method for Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate has been developed using the inexpensive and environmentally friendly reagent I2/K2CO3 at room temperature. The method is mild and simple with good to high product yields.
