Abstract

We wish to report an easy, mild, and effective procedure for the synthesis of benzimidazole, 2-substituted benzimidazole, and benzothiazole derivatives by employing 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium tetrafluoroborate [BMPTFB]-ionic liquid as a catalyst in ethanol at room temperature. The reaction between 1,2-diamines and various aldehydes/some organic acids in presence of the catalyst allowed to result in the targeted product(s). The features of this protocol are short reaction time, ease of handling of the catalyst, mild reaction conditions, and moderate to high yield of the product.
