Abstract
Over half a century ago Bouveault(I) and other autors(2-4) unsuccessfuly attempted to prepare α-nitroacetoacetic ester. They found that the nitration of ethyl acetoacetate leads to ethyl nitroacetate and some degradation products. The exchange reaction between ethyl α-iodoacetoacetate and silver nitrite did not succeed as well.
