Cerium(IV) Oxidation of Hydroquinones and Sulfides with a Dual Oxidant System

Pages 237-239 | Received 27 Jul 1978, Published online: 05 Dec 2006

Abstract

The versatility of cerium(IV) ion as an oxidant for organic compounds has been documented.1 Despite its enormous potential the practicality of cerium(IV) oxidation in preparative chemistry has been limited by the requirement of large quantities of reagents. This is due to the combined factor that cerium(IV) ion can accept only one electron at a time, and such oxidants have relatively high molecular weights.
