Abstract
We wish to report a simple and efficient synthesis of the 4-unsubstituted azetidinone (6a) in 25% overall yield from 6- aminopencillanic acid (6-APA) (2). The conversion of (6a) into analogues of sulfazecin (1), a novel, monocyclic β-lactam antibiotic1, has been described in the patent literature6.
