Abstract

A short synthesis of the cyclopentenone antibiotic methylenomycin B, 1, has recently been accomplished in these laboratories,²via the salt of a carboxymethyl-substituted 1,4- diketone, generated by the action of methyllithium on a Fittig bislactone 2 (R = C₂H₅).
