Abstract
4-Demethoxy-7,9-dideoxydaunomycinone (1) is a common intermediate in a number of syntheses1,2 of 4-demethoxydaunomycinone (2), the aglycone of the highly antineoplastic anthracycline 4-demethoxydaunomycin.3 Earlier, we reported4 the use of naturally occurring 2-methylanthraquinones for the synthesis of 2-formylmethoxyanthraquinones which could act as intermediates for the synthesis of anthracyclinones. We now report a convenient synthesis of 4-demethoxy-7,9-dideoxydaunomycinone (1) from 1,4-dihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (3).
