Abstract
The trans-2,3-disubstituted tetrahydropyran 7, obtained in eight steps from methyl α-D-glucoside, and the phosphonium salt 10, obtained from thiophene in six steps, were successfully combined in a Wittig reaction to form 11, the O-benzyl enantiomer of the naturally occurring thiophene ineupatoriol.
