Ti(III) Salt Mediated Formation of 1,3-Dioxolanes

Abstract

The radical formed by reduction of benzil with Ti(III) ion adds to aldehydes to give at 0 [ddot]C diols 3 in quantitative yields. At 40 [ddot]C dioxolanes 4 are formed instead. The role of Ti(III) ion and temperature in these acetalizations are discussed.
