Abstract

Adamantane was chlorinated, without chlorine, by tertiarybutylchloride and Lewis acids. The result with AlCl3 gives the best yield (90.5%) and selectivity (95.4%) in 1-chloroadamantane so far reported. The results are consistent with an hydride transfer mechanism.
