A Mild and Convenient Deprotection of 4-Phenyl 1,3-Dioxolane Derivatives Under Catalytic Hydrogenation

Abstract

A new procedure for deprotection of 4-phenyl 1,3-dioxolanes to liberate free carbonyl compound under catalytic hydrogenation conditions is described.

2,4-benzodioxepines are known to be cleaved under catalytic hydrogenation, however, the present methodology offers advantages in preparation of chiral diols from styrene by asymetric dihydroxylation for a possible kinetic resolution of prochiral aldehydes.

All products were characterised by comparing with standard sample.
