Abstract
Accelerator‐driven subcritical systems (ADSs) are under investigation worldwide, because the unique feature of subcriticality provides new capabilities in the transmutation of long‐lived radioactive waste. The design of a future ADS requires fast and flexible transport calculation methods. As is shown in the article, coupled Monte Carlo and deterministic calculation methods fulfills this requirement. The paper describes the methodology of an energy‐based volumetric and angular coupling. A new type of Monte Carlo estimator has been developed for the determination of the source term. Test calculations with modified MCNPX and XSDRNPM codes are presented to prove the feasibility of the method.
