As Guest Editors, we are grateful for having had this opportunity to participate in compiling a Special Issue of VSD dedicated to Leonard Segel. From our perspective, this Special Issue serves as a fitting tribute to Leonard Segel and his contributions to VSD as a research area and the International Association that represents it.
We recognise that working with Len Segel has been a shared, cooperative endeavour, not just for us but also for his students, his colleagues in vehicle dynamics research and teaching, and those who have contributed time, effort, and leadership to the continued success of IAVSD. We thank all those who have helped in contributing to this legacy.
We also wish to acknowledge the IAVSD editors for their part in providing candidate papers for this special issue. Professor Shinichiro Horiuchi (one of the IAVSD editors and a visiting scholar at UMTRI earlier in his career) deserves special thanks and recognition for his expert management of the editorial and publishing arrangements.
It was Len Segel's way to advise ‘Separating the wheat from the chaff’ when first faced with a research challenge and then to respond to the need to meet future challenges by also saying ‘We will cross those bridges when we come to them’. We thank him for his advice and encouragement in our research activities. He was a leader, mentor, and colleague who taught us how to properly think about and plan vehicle dynamics research and then to clearly report and communicate those findings.
