Abstract
In September 1980, the Maritime Museum of Finland received information about a boat find in Lake Mekrijärvi, in the province of North Karelia. The Mekrijärvi find represents a type of boat that has been termed ‘the five‐piece boat’, which means that it is made up from five sections: hollowed out and expanded keel plank, hollowed out stempost and sternpost and two strakes. The strakes and ribs were fastened with slender tree roots in a special kind of sewing technique. The construction of the Mekrijärvi boat find demonstrates a long‐forgotten phase in the historical development of the clinker‐built boat.
