When the Veterinary Surgeons Act was first passed in 1926 it provided for two lists: the first an open list of registered veterinary surgeons who were graduates from a number of recognised universities or colleges, and a closed list made up of a small number of individuals who did not qualify for the first list but who, at the time the Act was passed, were providing a service and making a living in a veterinary practice. This was a closed list and it has remained closed to this day. This list of Registered Veterinary Practitioners contained the names of two women, the late Mrs Christmas and Miss Dawson.
