Osteodystrophic diseases of sheep in New Zealand II—“Bowie” or “bent-leg”

Pages 118-127 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Extract

In a previous paper (Fitch, Citation1943), attention was drawn to the occurrence of rickets in sheep. Reference was also made to a further condition of suckling lambs which differed in certain important respects from rickets affecting hoggets in New Zealand. It is believed that this condition has not previously been recorded. It bears only superficial resemblance to “bent-leg” of hoggets as seen in Scotland during the winter months and which is probably an example of true rickets due to a deficiency of vitamin D. Further, its occurrence in suckling lambs and its seasonal incidence (spring) serve to distinguish it from this condition.
