Chronic ovine laryngitis

Pages 144-146 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Extract

Cameron and Brilton (Citation1943) described chronic ovine laryngitis affecting stud yearling rams in California. The condition is characterized by a chronic abscess formation of the arytenoid cartilages, with resulting inflammatory oedema of the larynx and death by suffocation. At that time it was observed only in pure-bred yearling rams kept on full feed of dry grain including a high percentage of barley and oats. They attributed the predisposing cause of the condition to injury to the larynx by the grain awns which allowed the causative organism, Coryaebaclerium pyogenes, to enter and set up the abscess.
