Vaccination in the control of Brucella ovis infection in sheep

Pages 41-46 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Extract

Preliminary experiments (Buddle, Citation1954, Citation1957) have shown that rams may be effectively immunized against experimental and natural infections with Brucella ovis. The procedure which produced the most consistently satisfactory results was the simultaneous inoculation of B. abortus Strain 19 and a saline in oil adjuvant vaccine incorporating formalinized B. ovis organisms. However, the adjuvant vaccine inoculated alone induced a high level of protection in rams against experimental infection in a later trial, which prompted evaluation of the procedure under field conditions.
