The task of presenting a balanced view of recent developments in this field is not an easy one. We have witnessed the introduction of new anaesthetics and techniques during the last few years, and it is true to say that their introduction and evaluation is an essential step in the provision of “safe” anaesthesia. Our knowledge of the comparative value of different anaesthetics in the various species has also increased. Most developments, however, have taken place in the field of muscular relaxants and closed-circuit anaesthesia.
