Pages 76-86 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Abstract

Extract

Salmonellosis as a disease of pigs and poultry has been recognized in this country for many years, but it was not until 1949 that a Salmonella was isolated from cattle and horses. In 1949, salmonellosis was associated with mortalities in sheep. A previous review of Salmonella infections of animals in New Zealand was given by Josland (Citation1950), and Bishop (Citation1950) and Jebson (Citation1950) have recorded their observations on the disease as it manifests itself in cattle and sheep respectively. This review covers the period from 1948 to June, 1957, and is based on routine diagnostic specimens submitted to Wallaceville and Ruakura Diagnostic Units.
