Interest in Vibrio fetus as a cause of infertility in cattle has become widespread during the last decade. The classic experiments of Lawson and MacKinnon (Citation1952) did much to clarify the position with regard to transmission, route of infection, and pattern of the infertility syndrome. It has often been suggested that V. fetus is not a primary pathogen in that the course of the infection can be modified by the environment. In view of the environmental differences between Great Britain and New Zealand, both climatic and managerial, it was clearly desirable to study the disease experimentally in this country and, if possible, to devise practical methods of control in accordance with New Zealand conditions.
