Abstract

Extract

In 1956, a severe outbreak of poisoning of cattle by fodder beet was recognized by S. L. Whyte, B.V.Sc, in Taranaki. Twenty deaths, resulted. Rumen contents from some of the affected animals were forwarded to Ruakura, where the pH, lactic acid content, and bacteriology of the samples wore studied. It was thought probable ‘that the cause of death was similar to that in wheat-gorged’ ruminants.
