An indirect haemagglutination test for the detection of Vibrio fetus antibodies

Part 3: Preservation of sensitized erythrocytes

Abstract

Extract

The indirect haemagglutination test for the detection of Vibrio fetus antibodies has greater sensitivity than the bacterial agglutination test (Te Punga, Citation1958). One of the disadvantages of the method is the necessity to prepare sensitized erythrocytes daily because of haemolysis and loss of sensitivity of the modified red cells on storage at 4°C. Several methods of preservation have been tried at this laboratory, both before and after sensitization. Cells sensitized before attempted preservation invariably lose their specificity for reacting with V. fetus antibody.
