Leptospirosis of calves caused by infection with Leptospira pomona, and commonly known as “redwater”, has been recognized in New Zealand for the past decade (N.Z. Dept. Agric., Citation1951). The same organism has since been detected in adult cows, in which it can cause abortion (Te Punga and Bishop, Citation1953), in lambs (Hartley, Citation1952), and in pigs and dogs (Salisbury, Citation1954). The only other species which has seemed to be of any importance is L. hyos, which is confined mainly to pigs.
