Dieldrin poisoning in sheepdogs was suspected early in 1958, and during the next two years specimens from 40 similar cases were submitted to Wallaceville for examination. The symptoms described by field veterinarians were all of the same general pattern and similar to the syndrome producedin other species by the chlorinated hydrocarbon group of insecticides (CitationGarner, 1957). Dieldrin was recovered from post-mortem tissue samples in every case. Wherever possible, other causes of nervous symptoms such as canine distemper, canine viral hepatitis, or polio-encephalomalacia, poisoning by lead, strychnine, arsenic, or sodium monofluoroacetate were eliminated by appropriate histopathological or chemical techniques.
