Previous work at this laboratory has shown that the indirect haemagglutination test for the detection of antibodies to Vibrio fetus has greater sensitivity than the bacterial agglutination test (CitationTe Punga, 1958). Numerous tests on vaginal mucus from known infected and non-infected animals have shown no discrepancies which would, throw doubt on the specificity of the reaction. This has continued to be the case in so far as tests on vaginal mucus are concerned, but apparent anomalies arise when tests are conducted on bovine sera. It became obvious at an early stage in the investigations on the indirect haemagglutination test that sera from apparently non-infected animals would react with sensitized cells.
