On 7 September, 1961, the Prime Minister announced the Government's decision to locate the New Zealand Veterinary School at Palmerston Northwith Massey Agricultural College. He said that it concurred with the recommendation of the University Senate and that “the decision will enable an early start to be made on this long-delayed project”. He also said that “the Government had had to consider very carefully a number of critical balancing factors before arriving at its decision on the site for the School”, that “the decision was based entirely on the relevant considerations of Cabinet, all other local claims and pressures being set aside”, and that “the Government is completely satisfied that its decision is the correct one”.
