This, I believe, is the first meeting of the Veterinary Association since the announcement on 7 September, 1961, by the Prime Minister that Cabinet agreed with the recommendations of the Senate of the University of New Zealand that a Veterinary School be established at Massey Agricultural College. It will be recalled that the University Grants Committee was invited to bring down detailed proposals for the establishment and operation of the School. The University Grants Committee, in turn, has asked Massey to proceed with the detailed arrangements and I am sure that you will all be interested in what has been done and what is likely to be done in the near future. Top priority has been given to the selection of the first Professor of Veterinary Science who will be Dean of the Veterinary Faculty. Great importance is attached to this appointment since it will be the Dean's function to advise on the proposed curriculum and the teaching and research requirements of the Veterinary faculty, and to administer the faculty during and after its establishment. Further, the Dean will be expected to attract to the College a strong staff as well as the active support and goodwill of the farming and related industries with which veterinarians are in contact. It is also hoped that the Dean will provide academic leadership for the veterinary profession throughout New Zealand.
